WAN Optimization is routinely employed in the Media and Entertainment market to capture the full value of expensive WAN links. If you purchased a 1 Gbps link between Los Angeles and London, but only get 1/10th of the available bandwidth, 90% of the cost of that link expense would be wasted. WAN Optimization from companies like Aspera, Signiant, Tixel, and File Catalyst will typically ensure that over 90% of the maximum bandwidth is achieved regardless of the latency.
Pixspan, in combination with WAN Optimization functionality, delivers a further 2-5X speed multiplier, which has a tremendously positive impact on workflow, schedules, and meeting deadlines. Pixspan achives this improvement by employing patented encoding and decoding algorithms to compact the content during transmission.

A Pixspan customer commissioned a case study that looked at the transfer times for Digital Intermediate content of an popular epic fantasy movie over a high latency 1 Gbps WAN link. The latency employed was equivalent to what is typically experienced between New Zealand and Los Angeles (about 150 msec). The content was comprised of 2K 3D 48 fps DPX frames totalling 8.2 TBytes. The transfer of this entire content, which took 20 hours, is shown in the following diagram. This test illustrated how WAN Optimization achieved about 91% of the available bandwidth, resulting in almost an entire day for the transfer for this content.
This same content was transferred with Pixspan enabled with the identical WAN optimization and link conditions. The result was that the transfer time was reduced from 20 hours to just under 4 1/2 hours. This level of reduction enables incredible new flexibility in the workflow.
