The Alexa 65 from ARRI is the latest in a series of high-resolution, high dynamic range video cameras. Pixspan supports the Alexa 65’s camera raw format to reduce the size of the data about 50% while preserving its full fidelity. This new camera records at 6K, 12-bit, for the largest format currently available, the video equivalent of the highest quality large-format film which is sadly becoming rare. Cinematographers often choose the camera and its companion model, the Alexa 35, for high quality productions because of the desire to capture the full fidelity of the camera.
In its design, the Alexa 65 and 35 make the full, uncompressed image available to the user in ARRIRaw format, the raw Bayer Pattern. These raw video files are large in size, 30 Megabytes per frame for the 6K Alexa 65 and 7 Megabytes per frame for the 2.88K Alexa 35. Pixspan’s data reduction varies with the content of each frame, but is approximately 50% for typical cinematic content.
